GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: Elective. May be used to satisfy one of the two mathematics credits required for graduation.
COURSE SEQUENCE: May be taken as the first course in the mathematics sequence.
OTHER PREREQUISITES: Consent of the Mathematics Department.
SUBSEQUENT COURSE: Plane Geometry, Geometry, or Geometry Honors.
STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Conventional.
COURSE OVERVIEW: The goal of this course is to expose the student to algebraic structure and to train the student in the computational and manipulative skills necessary in a college preparatory class. Emphasis is given to solving linear and quadratic equations, factoring, irrational expressions, applications of algebraic skills, and graphing various types of equations. Students will be required to demonstrate competency of basic arithmetic skills to receive credit. After competency has been demonstrated, a calculator may be used. The type of calculator will require instructor approval.
