Physical Education Policies and Rules

Junior and Senior Physical Education
Instructor: Mr. White
OBJECTIVES
A. Optimum physical fitness development for all students.
B. The acquisition of sports skills and knowledge leading to participation and enjoyment in performing and observing others perform.
C. Basic understanding of the physical and psychological needs of the human organism for sports, physical activity and fitness.

ATTENDANCE

A. Documented absences as described in the handbook are not part of the five (5) total days or five (5) days of any
one class period as described in the attendance policy when the proper procedures have been followed.
B. Undocumented absences include all other absences not covered by written documentation.  If a student fails because of absences, then his/her grade cannot be lowered beyond a 59% unless he/she was failing prior to the absences.
C. Students who are in the nurse's office for longer than 20 minutes will receive a 2 point deduction from the participation grade for that particular class period.
D. Unexcused/suspension absence will result in a 2 point deduction from the student's unit participation grade.  The student will, however, be allowed to make-up a unit test, which may have been scheduled for that day.

TARDIES

A. If a student does not enter into the locker room before the tardy bell rings, then the instructor will record a tardy against him/her, which will be addressed by the Attendance Office.
B. A student will be considered tardy to the gymnasium if he/she is not fully dressed and sitting in line for attendance when the second bell rings.  All students will be permitted one tardy per marking period.  However, each additional tardy will result in one (1) point deduction from the unit attitude grade.

MEDICAL (To be brought to the P.E. teacher flrst - not the nurse)
A.
Permanent Medical: Depending upon how long the student is excused from physical education class, the student will be placed in a study hall and h/she will not receive a grade or credit for the quarter/or the semester.  If the student attends P.E. for at least five weeks he/she will earn the .25 credits.
B.
Temporary Medical: A temporary medical requires a note from the family physician or doctor, and the student is not required to dress for activity.  If the student misses more than four weeks during a quarter because of a doctor's medical, he/she will not receive credit for that particular quarter.  However, the student is required to take the final exam to receive credit for the semester.  The Student is responsible for obtaining and completing all make-up work.

Senior Year: Once a student has successfully completed the Junior Leadership Program, they are placed with a physical education teacher and during their senior year they will act as the instructor's assistant during class.
C.       
Students leaders are not allowed to exemptfrom physical education class.

GENERAL RULES

A. If a student is injured, he/she should immediately infon-n the instructor.
B. All items should be locked in an assigned locker during the P.E. hour and in a small box locker before and after the class period.  If a student fails to close his/her lock then it will be replaced with a "blue lock" to protect him/her from theft.  The cost to remove the blue lock is twenty-five cents.
C.
All jewelry is to be removed before attending physical education class.
D. Chewing gum or eating any type of food in the locker room or in class is not permitted.
E. Students are not allowed to leave class without a pass or permission fon-n an instructor before the bell rings.
F. Students are not permitted to leave their attendance line until the class has completed warm-ups or until the teacher has dismissed the class to the next activity.
G. All towels and rentals are to be returned to the laundry bin located in the locker room area.  Rental shoes should be returned to the office aide of the instructor.
H. All students are expected to put forth I 00% effort during warm-ups and unit activities.



PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADING AND EVALUATION


II. Unit Grade Criteria

A. Written Test = 30 points

1. Terminology of the activity
2. Knowledge of rules and safety of the activity
3. Knowledge of specific skills and strategies of the activity
4. Understanding of the activity

B. Physical performance and skills test = 50 points

I .Practical skill test
2. Demonstrate ability to play game with proper skills
3. Individual performance of skills
4. Individual improvement of skills during the unit

C. Attitude and Effort = 20 points

3.      Fitness Component/Warm-ups

These three areas (written test, physical performance and practical test, and attitude and effort) are calculated together for the unit grade.  The unit grades are then calculated together for the quarter grade.  The quarter grades may be adjusted by subtracting point due to deductions or adding bonus points.  The quarter grades are averaged together to determine the semester grade.  At the end of each semester, the students will take a final exam, which will be worth 20% of the semester grade.

Each semester, the student will be responsible for completing a written assignment.  The assignment will be worth 20 points and be graded per the school rubric (5-focus, 5-support, 5-organization, 5-conventions).  In addition, students will be required to perform a battery of fitness tests at the beginning and end of the semester.  Each test will be worth 5 points.

111. Additional Criteria Affecting Grading

A. Attendance - If a student receives an unexcused absence, then a 2 point deduction will be assessed to the participation portion of his/her grade.

B. An attendance line tardy results in a I point deduction for each tardy, which is applied to the student's unit attitude grade.  The first tardy of each quarter will not result in a I point deduction.

C. No Dress Policy

I . The first no dress will result in a 3% deduction from the quarter grade.

2. The second no dress will result in an additional 10% (13% total) from the quarter grade, a counselor referral and a phone call to the student's parent or guardian.
3. The third no dress will result in a discipline referral by the teacher and the student will fail (59%) the nine weeks.
4. The fourth no dress will result in a 14% deduction (45%) and another discipline referral.

5. The fifth no-dress and beyond will result in a 15% deduction (30%, 15%) and additional discipline referrals.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXEMPTION

A. Students enrolled in grades I I or 12 may request an exemption from physical education because of his/her involvement in a current interscholastic sport or Band.
1. If eligible to exempt from physical education, a student may be placed In a study hall.  Once a student is placed in a study hall, he/she must return to physical education at the completion of the sport or band season, immediately after he/she quits the sport or band, or is removed from the activity.  The student would remain in study hall if he/she is participating in a subsequent athletic season.
2. As an alternative to study hall, a student-athlete or band member may request to be placed in an academic class.  In order to exercise this option, a student must be a participant in an interscholastic sport or band at the beginning of the
