| Now that you have visited the introduction page and completed
your written assignment, you are ready to create a mask of your own.
Your mask should.....
...display an emotion. (happy, sad, angry, confused)
...utilize exaggeration. (expression, proportion)
...incorporate an outside material. (raffia, wire, string, natural objects)
...express a part of your personality that you would like to enhance
or hide.

Step 1:
Draw FIVE thumbnail sketches. They should include the
requirements listed in the table above. Please remember that masks do not
have to conceal the entire face, look anything like the wearer, or follow
any of the traditional rules. Use the images that you collected in earlier
assignments to help with your designs. Why do you like the images you chose,
and can you incorporate similar ideas into your own work?
Step 2:
Create one FINAL sketch. Draw your idea from multiple
views. (front, side, etc.) This sketch should be neat, organized,
and in depth. Include decoration/color choices, approximate sizes,
and method of display. (Are you going to wear it or hang it?)
Step 3:
Create your mask! First, construct an armature of newspaper
wrapped in plastic. Then roll out a thick slab and lay it over the armature.
Form the basic features. Score and slip attachments/refinements and create
textures. You may decorate your mask with any of the colorants available
in the studio.
