"Fumblerules" are grammar or usage mistakes that call attention to the rule. The following are by William Safire.

  1. Avoid run-on sentences they are very hard to read.
  2. Avoid commas, that are not necessary.
  3. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
  4. Also, avoid awkward or affected alliteration.
  5. Kill all exclamation points!!!
  6. Don't use no double negatives.
  7. Be more or less specific.
  8. The passive voice is to be ignored.
  9. Never use a long word when a diminutive one will do.
  10. Never, ever use redundancies.
  11. Who needs rhetorical questions?
  12. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.
