Lincoln-Way Community High School
Mathematics Department – Algebra 1
Unit 2 - ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS
Enduring Understanding:
Algebraic equations can help to describe and explain relationships in business, finance, and daily living choices.

Essential Questions:

  • Why is ratio, proportion and percent such an integral part of daily living?
  • For what purpose do we learn to solve absolute value equations, linear equations, and linear inequalities?
  • What vocations need the concept of perimeter to complete daily tasks?

Target Goals:

  • Define, set-up and reduce ratios
  • Solve proportional equations
  • Solve equations involving percent increase/decrease
  • Use percent to solve problems: interest rates, sales tax, discount, etc.
  • Solve absolute value equalities and inequalities
  • Solve linear multiple step equations
  • Define, set-up, and solve consecutive integer problems
  • Define, set-up, and solve perimeter/circumference word/application problems.
  • Solve literal equations/formulas

Assessment:

  • Daily observation
  • Homework
  • Paper-pencil tests and quizzes
  • Open-ended reflections

Activities:

  • Collect and interpret data from multimedia that shows the use of ratio, proportion, and percent in daily living
  • “Equation-in-a-bag” group activity (sequential ordering of steps to solve linear equations)
  • Math BINGO
  • “Scrambled eggs” group activity
State Goals:
6.D.4       7.A.4b       7.C.4a        8.D.4
