Polygons

Enduring Understanding:

  • Polygons are used in creating designs for decorating, architecture, cutting gemstones and many other applications.

Essential Questions:

  • What is a polygon?
  • How are polygons used in real life situations?
  • What is the relationship between the number of sides and the angle measures in a polygon?
  • What is the relationship between the number of sides and the number of diagonals in a polygon?

Target Goals:

  • To be able to name a polygon
  • To be able to find the sum of the measures of the interior and exterior angles of a polygon.
  • To be able to find the measure of each
    interior and exterior angle of a regular
    polygon.
  • To be able to find the number of diagonals in a polygon.

Assessment:

  • Tests
  • Quizzes
  • Practice problems
  • Project

Activities:

  • Complete problems involving angles and diagonals in a polygon.
  • Complete a project involving tessellations and/or string art.

State Goals:

  • 9.A.4b Make perspective drawings, tessellations and scale drawings, with and without
    the use of technology.
  • 9.B.4 Recognize and apply relationships within and among geometric figures.
