COURSE OVERVIEW: The Wind Ensemble is the top band performance ensemble at Lincoln-Way Central. This very select group holds specific instrumentation and a maximum enrollment of thirty-eight students. The Wind Ensemble has a very active performance schedule which includes local concerts, Illinois High School Music Association contests, and numerous festivals and competitions throughout the state. Students in this group are required to perform a chamber winds concert, participate in Illinois High School Association Solo/Ensemble Contest, and perform in a recital each year.

Wind Symphony

COURSE OVERVIEW: The Wind Symphony is a highly select organization with controlled instrumentation that limits enrollment to approximately 45 students. The Wind Symphony has a very active performance schedule throughout the school year including regularly scheduled concerts, specialty programs, SWSC, IMEA and IHSA festivals and contests. In addition, members of the Wind Symphony are expected to perform in the IHSA solo and ensemble contest in March. All members are eligible to participate in any music extra curricular activity. Members are expected to practice individually and in extra rehearsals or sectionals. Private instruction is highly encouraged. It is strongly recommended that students own their own instruments; however, specialized school owned instruments may be available with a rental fee.

COURSE OVERVIEW: Beginning Strings is designed to prepare students for admission into the String Orchestra. The course will take students from the beginning aspects of string playing, arriving at the courses’ end with a formal understanding of the technical and artistic nuances of performing violin, viola, cello or bass. A variety of teaching styles and texts will be used throughout the course. Private instruction, though not required, is highly recommended. There is a nominal rental charge for the use of school-owned instruments, if available.

Intermediate Strings

COURSE OVERVIEW: Intermediate Strings is a continuation of Beginning Strings for Lincoln-Way students wishing to further their studies on violin, viola, cello and bass. Intermediate Strings is a crucial link between the efforts of Beginning Strings and a student’s placement in a Lincoln-Way Orchestra. In Beginning Strings, students would gain an introduction into the art of performing violin only in a structured, homogenous setting. Intermediate Strings would allow students the option of changing their focus to viola, cello or bass having gained proficiency and knowledge on the violin. Violin may still be studied in Intermediate Strings. After completion of Intermediate Strings, students may choose to enroll in a Lincoln-Way Orchestra.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course offers training in the intermediate and advanced skills of performing in a string ensemble. Technically challenging repertoire and solo performance opportunities will be teamed with weekly audio assessment and individual enrichment assignments. Public performances will highlight the course as well as IHSA Contest and clinics throughout the year. There is a nominal rental charge for the use of school-owned instruments, if available.

Guitar 1

STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Conventional. Group and individualized instruction and assessment including both supervised and private practice.
COURSE OVERVIEW: Beginning Guitar is designed to offer basic, but intensive, training in the playing of the standard six-string acoustic guitar. The student will learn to read music notation, perform basic chord progressions, and play exercises and short pieces alone and in ensembles. Listening to guitar music and discussing the guitar's role in music of the past and present are also components of the course. Although all types of music will be heard and played, this course is not a "rock and roll” guitar class. Students will discover, however, that the universal musical concepts they learn apply to popular styles as well. This class is not for the student that has studied guitar previously.

STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Students must own their own nylon string classical guitar, (guitar must be approved by the instructor; guitars may be purchased through the music department).
COURSE OVERVIEW: Guitar II is a continuation of Beginning Guitar 1. Skills learned in Beginning Guitar 1 will be amplified with intense training in both classical and commercial technique. Instruction will be given through the venues of traditional textbook, ensemble arrangements, solo opportunities, and student compositions. Students will continue learning classical style in both solo and small ensemble work with the goal of performing a grade 2 1/2 - 3 solo at the end of the course. In addition to classical training, commercial/jazz technique and performance will be studied and applied. Music theory and arranging will be an essential aspect of the course with all students composing a small ensemble work during the semester.

Guitar Studio
Members of this class are eligible to audition for and participate in music department extracurricular activities.

Students must own their own nylon-stringed classical guitar to participate.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The Chorale is the flagship ensemble of the Lincoln-Way Central Choral Music Program. and is dedicated to performing the finest literature for mixed voices. The curriculum is designed to increase musical skills and abilities to an advanced level. Members will find themselves challenged by the level of difficulty of music, rudiments of music theory, and concepts of singing that are covered. The Chorale has a very active performance schedule throughout the school year including scheduled concerts, special programs, and SWSC, IMEA, and IHSA festivals. Members of the Chorale are encouraged to take private vocal lessons and to participate in the IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest in March. Members are expected to practice individually outside of class. Members are eligible to participate in any non-auditioned musical activity. Membership in the Chorale makes students eligible to audition for the Lincoln-Way Central Madrigal Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Members of the Chorale will participate in the annual SIAM Music Booster Discount Card sale.

Concert Chorale

COURSE OVERVIEW: The Concert Chorale is a select ensemble of up to 30 women's voices selected by audition. Students will learn all basics of vocal and choral performance, as well as advanced music theory and music reading skills. Literature performed will be of the highest quality for women's voices and may include classical, modern, ethnic, and jazz styles. The Concert Chorale will perform in Lincoln-Way Central Music Department concerts that include choral music. The Concert Chorale will participate in IHSA Contest and may participate in the SWSC Choral Festival and other festivals as opportunities arise. Members may join the after-school women's singing group "Velvet" and are encouraged to audition for the select "Knight Singers."

Mixed Choir

COURSE OVERVIEW: Using the most advanced technology available (including keyboard synthesizers and computers) the student will develop an understanding of and appreciation for the elements of music including pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre and form. The first semester of the course will include an introduction to piano keyboard skills, music notation, theory. This class is for the student with no previous piano/keyboard experience.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This is a composite course in music theory, history, and appreciation, designed to aid those students who intend to continue their music education beyond high school. Through the study of the history of music, the student is taught the rudiments of music theory, compositional techniques, and characteristics of music from various periods. In addition, instruction is given in ear training including interval and chord recognition and rhythmic/melodic dictation. Emphasis is placed upon individual creative projects in music writing. Those who successfully complete the course are encouraged to pursue advanced placement at the collegiate level.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course offers students the opportunity to explore their original musical ideas in an environment rich in computer and music technology resources. Students will learn how to use the computer to interface with state of the art electronic musical instruments. They will be able to access thousands of sounds ranging from ancient flutes and lutes, to traditional pianos and horns, to contemporary guitars and drums, to exotic sitars and tablas, and on to futuristic synthesizers and sound effects. Whether creating original approaches to existing music or composing brand new music, students will learn and apply critical skills in planning, problem solving, and decision making. Working independently or in collaborative teams, they will learn to use the computer as a creative partner accessing its power to bring their imagination to life.

COURSE OVERVIEW: Music Technology 3 is a continuation of Music Technology 1 and 2 with an emphasis on independent projects. Students enrolled in Music Technology 3 will compose and arrange music for classroom use as well as possible use with other disciplines, i.e., Art, Business, Dance. Students will learn sound sampling and the art of placing sounds of their environment into artistic endeavors. Weekly listening of computer-generated music will assist in bridging current musical knowledge with new state of the art techniques. Advanced students will have the opportunity to combine music technology and video during the semester.

Individualized Music

COURSE OVERVIEW: Individualized Music is designed to provide music experiences for the student with special needs in a classroom situation which allows for a high degree of individualized instruction. Students will receive exposure to a wide variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional experiences. Students will have the opportunity to develop and improve fine motor skills, problem-solving techniques, auditory, and tactile awareness, and communicative and expressive abilities, as well as experiencing a learning situation with a high degree of creative success.
