SPECIAL SERVICES

Students are placed in these classes through the Individualized Educational Plan (I.E.P.) process. Each student enrolled has goals and objectives designed to bring the student’s skill and mastery level as close to grade level as possible.

Improving Communications
SEMESTERS: 2
CREDIT: 1
GRADE PLACEMENT: 9, 10, 11, 12
GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: Elective.
COURSE SEQUENCE: Improving Communications I, II, III, IV.
OTHER PREREQUISITES: Must be in the Hearing Impaired Program.
STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Individualized and group instruction.
COURSE OVERVIEW: The student will participate in a variety of activities designed to improve his/her communication skills. Emphasis will be on speech, speech reading, auditory training and language development, as well as interpersonal communication. Immediate feedback, positive reinforcement, and peer cooperation will be utilized. (In addition, an Improving Communications/Lunch course, in lieu of student's 22-minute study hall, is designed for the students who require minimal resource assistance with their mainstreamed classes. This course receives no credit.)

Individualized Algebra AB

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is provided for eligible students of which placement in a standard education mathematics is deemed inappropriate by consensus of standard and special services teachers, related services personnel and parents. Topics include concepts from algebra, such as systems of equations, and quadratic equations. Also included will be concepts from geometry, such as circles, right triangle trigonometry, transformations, and proofs. This course will focus on skills from algebra and geometry, but it will also cover the mathematics of everyday life. This area may include the application of banking and investments, insurance, taxes, major life purchases (for example: buying a home or car), and budgeting. A scientific calculator is required for this course.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is provided for eligible students who could benefit from further instruction in reading. Basic skills covered will include word recognition, word attack, vocabulary comprehension, speed and fluency, and appreciation of the value of reading. Students reading skills will be assessed and an individual program will be developed for each student based on their skills. The Individualized Reading course fulfills the reading graduation requirement for Lincoln-Way High School students.

Individualized Elements of Biology will cover a variety of topics including the scientific methods, graphing, metric system, the cell structure as it relates to plants and animals, scientific tools as they relate to biology, characteristics of living and nonliving things, ecology and environmental issues. The class will use a variety of materials and methods of presentation. Students will do laboratory-based experiments, learn methods of collecting and interpreting facts and data, and will learn important biological concepts and ideas. The following topics will be covered in this class: scientific method, graphing, metric system, scientific tools, volcanoes and earthquakes, planets, weather and climate, rock layers, matter, sound, light, motion and forces, sound and light waves and energy. Students participate in a self-development curriculum as well as utilize this resource class as a study period and receive assistance from the P.A.L.S. (Personal Adjustment Level System) teacher. The ultimate goal is for the student to transition into the standard education classroom. (In addition, a P.A.L.S. Resource/Lunch, in lieu of the student's 22 minute study hall, is designed for the student who requires minimal emotional/behavioral support. This course receives no credit.)

STUDENT AND STAFF ORGANIZATION: Individual and small group instruction.
COURSE OVERVIEW: This course and support service is provided for those students eligible for special services who are in need of instructional support in either individualized or mainstream courses. Along with a curriculum, this course will be designed for each student’s needs as identified in their I.E.P. Through the use of the student’s mainstream or individualized instruction assignments, emphasis will be placed on the development or improvement of organizational skills, handling stress in the mainstream class, study skill methods, and adapting and compensating for the learning disability. (In addition, a Resource/Lunch course, in lieu of the student’s 22-minute study hall, is designed for the student who requires minimal resource assistance with their mainstreamed classes. This course receives no credit.)
