L-W Central Students Team Up with Special Rec Athletes
Friday, April 24, 2015

Nearly 500 Lincoln-Way Central students received a lesson in humility thanks to the athletes from the Lincoln-Way Special Recreation Association who spent the morning playing wheelchair basketball, sit volleyball, gold ball and bocce ball with Central students.

Students in Lincoln-Way Centrals Human Performance class with teacher and Physical Education Department Chair John Karales had the opportunity to play the modified games as if they were individuals with a physical disability.

Our students were really impacted by the level of athleticism demonstrated by the LWSRA athletes with physical challenges, said Karales. Todays activities gave students a personal experience and awareness of how hard LWSRA athletes work.

Lincoln-Way Central students also raised nearly $1,500 for LWRSA to help support the opportunities and resources they offer to the community.

It was a really humbling experience, said junior Tyler Erickson who plays on Centrals football and basketball teams. I could not do what I usually do like running down the basketball court. It taught me to never take what you have for granted and use what you have to the fullest.

LWRSA Executive Director Keith Wallace spoke to each class after students had the opportunity to play all four sports. One in four families has a family member with a disability, he said.

We need you to be our eyes and ears. There are people with physical disabilities who dont know these sports exist and we need your help to build awareness, get them involved and help keep them active, Wallace said.

LWRSA also has volunteer and employment opportunities for Lincoln-Way students.

Central football player Dominic Cooper said it was difficult to steer the wheelchair.

It was really awesome to see the hard work of the LWSRA athletes and it just shows you not to take things for granted, Cooper said.

At 7 pm., Lincoln-Way Central students from football and girls and boys basketball as well as faculty will play a wheelchair basketball game against the LWSRA team.
