Lincoln-Way Students Put Welding Skills to Work
Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Eleven top performing Welding Occupations students from Lincoln-Way East and North put their skills to work recently as part of the Pipefitter for a Day program.

Students participated in apprenticeship classes including math/drafting, brazing and soldering copper, and rigging at The Pipefitters Union Local 597 Training Center in Mokena. In the afternoon, students worked with an apprentice to fine-tune their welding skills.

The Pipefitter for a Day program gave our students a behind the scenes look at what it takes to be successful in the industry, said Daymon Gast, Lincoln-Way welding teacher. We are grateful for our partnership with The Pipefitters Union Local 597 and for their willingness to provide resources, lend their expertise, offer classroom discussions and provide tours to our students.

The partnership has been successful as several Lincoln-Way grads have gone on to become Pipefitters after learning about the organization through their high school welding class, Gast said.
