More than 50 athletes from Lincoln-Way and the surrounding area participated in the 7th annual Youth Tennis Tournament hosted by Lincoln-Way North.

During the two-day event, 93 matches were played at North and East tennis courts on Friday, June 19. On Saturday, double matches were contested at North.

The boys and girls played both singles and doubles in three divisions; sixth through eighth grade, freshmen-sophomore, and junior-senior.

The event was coordinated by Wes Cooley and Mike Bacon, Lincoln-Way North's girl's and boy's tennis coaches. The other tennis coaches in the district were instrumental in encouraging their athletes to participate.

"I run a tournament like this over the summer so that students can experience good quality match play without the pressure of the season," said Cooley. "It is nice to get the kids together so they might become friends because they have tennis in common."

"I was very impressed with the sportsmanship that was on display this weekend, said Cooley. And although some matches were vigorously contested, they all ended with a hand shake in congratulations to both sides."

In the junior-senior boys singles category, the champion was Brian Galassini from North and in doubles, it was Bobby Gilman from East and Mike Schultz from Bradley in doubles. For girls, the doubles champions were Kelsey Browning and Meg Witt from North.

For freshman-sophomore boys in the singles category, the champion was East student Joey Isdonas. For doubles, it was Joey Isdonas and Max Walker from East.

In the freshman-sophomore girls singles category, the champion was Cassie Weyker from East and for doubles, it was Rachel Schilke and Erin Klein from East.
