Thursday, July 2, 2015

Student cadets in the Lincoln-Way Central and West Air Force Junior ROTC program excelled in their field of peers at the June Cadet Leadership Course held at Scott Air Force Base in southern Illinois.

Approximately 125 student cadets attended the camp from 17 schools across five states. Each day began at 5:30 a.m. followed by a grueling physical training program, leadership skills sessions and team-building skills.

Our students did an incredible job representing Lincoln-Way at Scott Air Force Base, said Master Sergeant Dan Schliffka. Lincoln-Way Central and West cadets excelled in all areas. With 17 schools attending, the selection process for leadership positions and taking 12 of the 30 top awards is extremely impressive.

Cadets began their conditioning months in advance, all on their own time and enthusiastically, said Schliffka. Their determination and perseverance was taken to heart, spilling over into their Leadership Week.

Lincoln-Way Central and West JROTC program prepared 13 students to represent the Corps at the 2015 Cadet Leadership Course. Lincoln-Way cadets attending were: Kyra Baltas, Robert Buechele, Ann Coddington, Arley Coleman, Brianna Fasano, Megan Gulik, Kori Koopman, Christ Kuczero, Aidan Piwnicki, Vince Senese, Abigail Sutter, Cassidy Sutter and Rebekah Wirth.

Attending Cadet Leadership Course has been the best week of my life, said Cadet Koopman. I went with a goal to make friends, work as part of a team and become a better leader and person. I reached these goals and learned so much from the cadets in my flight.

The following honors and top leadership positions were earned by Lincoln-Way Central and West cadets: Top Cadet Distinguished Graduates - Kori Koopman and Vince Senese; Top Uniform Inspection - Bri Fasano, Kyra Baltas, and Megan Gulik; Top Room Inspection - Aidan Piwnicki, Rebekah Wirth, Kyra Baltas, Megan Gulik, Robert Buechele, Arley Coleman and Kori Koopman.

Five cadets were also named as Guides for their flight during the graduation ceremony: Aidan Piwnicki, Vince Senese, Chris Kuczero, Megan Gulik and Arley Coleman. In addition, Cassidy Sutter was selected as a Flight Commander and Kori Koopman was selected as a Squadron Commander. Cassidy Sutter was also selected for the first ever JROTC Cadet Choir which performed the National Anthem during the graduation ceremony.

Earlier this summer, Central and West cadets helped honor fallen heroes at three ceremonies held at cemeteries in the Manhattan area.

On June 5, cadets conducted the Color Guard and sang the national anthem at the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall ceremony held in Hoffman Estates.
