L-W Central Marching Knights Win Battle of the Bands
Thursday, July 16, 2015

The Lincoln-Way Central Marching Knights won the Battle of the Bands contest during the Mokena Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July Parade. The band was led by Drum Majors Devin Carroll and Erin Strache.

We are so honored to receive this special local recognition, said Chris Mroczek, Lincoln-Way Central Band Director. The Marching Knights practiced for three weeks in the evenings during the month of June to prepare for the parade. The Mokena July 4th Parade is our first performance together as a group, and it is always exciting for the new members to take their first marching steps as Marching Knights down Wolf Road.

Its always difficult for our judges to select a Battle of the Bands winner because our area schools have such outstanding bands, said Melissa Fedora, Executive Director of the Mokena Chamber of Commerce. We are so pleased the bands participate in our parade because their music really adds to the patriotic spirit of the morning.

The Marching Knights have 81 members, including more than 30 freshman students. The freshman students receive guidance from student section leaders, including Kaitlyn Forsythe, Sara Tucci, Max Boyle, Troy Torres, Alex Zacek, Cole Stencel, Matthew Fleckenstein, Dan Horgan, Gillian Nevins, Mackenna Marozas, and Megan Cosgrove, as well as the two drum majors.

Throughout the summer, the Marching Knights work with several highly qualified instructors to help them learn the basics of proper breathing, tone production, intonation, rhythm reading, body posture, and marching fundamentals.

During these rehearsals, the students also rehearsed and memorized the traditional, and well known, Marching Knights parade tune, "Battle Hymn of the Republic," which has been performed by several generations of Marching Knights since the organizations inception in 1974. The Marching Knights also began work on their 2015 competitive show, "Sport of the Future," which features music from the Samuel Barber's First Symphony.

The Marching Knights will resume rehearsals on July 26th when they depart for band camp at St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana for five days.

It has been a full and productive summer and the Marching Knights are looking forward to an exciting season as we diligently prepare for our first competition in September, Mroczek said.
