Two Lincoln-Way West coaches have received special professional recognitions as being among the best of the best coaches in the region and state.

Wests varsity assistant coach in softball and boys basketball Dick Mandella was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Wests wrestling Coach Mark Ruettiger was inducted into the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame.

We are so proud that West athletes are able to learn and grow under such outstanding coaches, said Lincoln-Way West Principal Dr. Monica Schmitt. Congratulations to Mark and Dick on earning such prestigious career milestones.

Previously, Mandella was head softball coach and assistant boys basketball coach at Lincoln-Way Central. Under his leadership, the Knights won the softball state championship in 2008 and he was named to the Illinois Softball Coaches Hall of Fame.

Ruettiger also previously coached at Lincoln-Way Central and has earned the recognition as Illinois first coach to win four state championships in wrestling.

These are very deserving honors for two well-respected coaches who have helped a lot of young athletes succeed and whose accomplishments will live on in the Hall of Fame, said West Athletic Director Ted Robbins.
