Lincoln-Way North Wins Summer Baseball State Championship

Lincoln-Way North High School captured the summer baseball state championship after defeating Marist 2-0 in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic championship last week.

"Our run to a state championship was characterized by outstanding team unity and perpetual toughness, said Coach Mitchell Nowicki. We had pitchers who challenged every hitter, our defense made unreal plays when needed and our hitters competed with tremendous heart in the batters box. Baseball is a team game, marked with individual battles and our guys competed with the very best."

Ben Troike, the Phoenix senior short stop was named MVP of the tournament. The victory marks Norths second summer state title.

There were many highlights including during the first playoff game North escaped with a 9-8 win over Andrew after being up 8-0. North beat Lockport, Lincoln-Way Central and Minooka to win regionals.

In the elite 8 pool play, North beat Oak Park River Forest 7-1 and headed into the winners bracket where we they won 10-1 against Niles Notre Dame. In the semifinals, North beat St. Charles East 5-4.

Assistant coaches include Joe Skarbek Sr., Tom Victor, Bill Cravens, Joe Infantino and Bob Cravens.
