Thursday, October 8, 2015

Lincoln-Way Central Junior ROTC students recently made a special visit to Arnold J. Tyler Elementary School in New Lenox to help lead a unique lesson for third grade students on the History of Flight and Space Exploration.

Cadets assisted Central AFROTC Aerospace Science Instructor Daniel K. Schliffka, MSgt, USAF (Ret) with the lesson, which showcased the advances in flight and space exploration over the last 2,500 years from flying men on wooden kites into battle to space probes exploring the atmosphere of Mars.

At the conclusion of the lesson, cadets and third grade students alike enjoyed shooting off miniature rockets in the gymnasium.

Our cadets enjoyed teaching third grade students about space as well as basic drill maneuvers to demonstrate the importance of discipline, leadership and teamwork, Schliffka said. The cadets represented Lincoln-Way Central well and served as positive role models for the third grade students.

Cadets who participated alongside MSgt Schliffka are as follows: Raechel Sweeney, Kori Koopman, Dustin Haven, Heather Wirth, Kristan Lazarski, Jenny Patterson, and Anna Horn.
