Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Lincoln-Way West sophomore Kate Pavlak was selected to participate as a member of the 2015 Macys Great American Marching Band during the 89th annual Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Pavlak was one of few students selected from Illinois to join the elite marching band which includes students from every state in the nation. She will perform with the color guard.

I am excited to be part of a band with students who care about marching band as much as I do, Pavlak said.

According to Music Festivals, the parade attracts about 2.5 million spectators and 50 million worldwide TV viewers.

During her trip to New York City, Pavlak will have a few days to learn the choreography with the rest of the color guard, visit popular attractions, attend a leadership workshop and celebrate Thanksgiving at a dinner dance with her new marching band friends.

I am mostly looking forward to the instruction I will receive from a former member of The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, Pavlak said. I am excited to learn and grateful for the experience.

To qualify, Pavlak created a video of her color guard choreography and submitted a written application.

We are extremely proud of Kate for this exciting accomplishment and we are confident she will be an excellent representation of Lincoln-Way West, said Cary Ruklic, Wests marching band director.

Pavlak said she enjoys dancing and spinning with Wests color guard and has met a lot of great people through marching band. Her favorite moment was making state finals for the second year in a row.
