Advanced Placement Social Science exams increase by 74 percent
Friday, August 5, 2016

In the 2015-2016 school year, District 210 Board of Education Goal 1.3D challenged teachers to increase the enrollment and success rate of high-achieving students in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. At the July 21 Board Meeting, Lincoln-Way released the results of the 2016 AP testing.

From 2015-2016, AP social science exams taken by Lincoln-Way students jumped from 1234 to 2143: an increase of over 900 exams. Getting our students to think about college and what that college experience would be like is so beneficial, says teacher, Michelle Graham. Enrolling in classes like this, taking the exams, and realizing success helps them to see a longer vision. It opens doors for these students, and shows them that college has opportunities for them.

Of the 3410 AP exams taken by District 210 students in 2016, 2143 - nearly two thirds - were in the social sciences. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Tim Reilly, says, The social sciences have really taken off at Lincoln-Way. Our U.S. History course is our on ramp for sophomores, and gives them a great experience; their experience in that class ultimately makes them excited for other AP opportunities. Lincoln-Way offered exams in the following AP social science courses:

Comparative Government
Human Geography
Micro Economics
Macro Economics
European History
U.S. Government
U.S. History
Psychology

Any test-taker who earns a score of 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam is guaranteed college credit at Illinois public universities; Lincoln-Way students earned a 3 or higher on 1,183 AP social science exams, an estimated tuition savings of $1,892,800. Teacher Marty Dykas says, These classes and exams give students an opportunity to see what they can do. I think many kids dont necessarily realize how smart they are until they try these things. The exciting part for us as teachers is to see them realize, I can do this, and then realize even bigger things that they didnt think they were capable of. The amount of money that these kids have saved because of the work theyve put in is unbelievable. It gives them so many opportunities for the future.
