L-W West Student Named Finalist in USS Illinois Art Contest
Thursday, March 5, 2015

Lincoln-Way West senior Jessi M. Karlic was named a finalist in the USS Illinois Ships Crest Design art contest. Nearly 140 entries were submitted and Karlic was named one of five finalists. Illinois students were invited to design the crest as a representation of Illinois and the USS Illinois, a new nuclear submarine. The finalists artwork best represented the dedication of the crew to the principles of democracy and peace through strength.

We are so proud that Jessis artwork continues to receive statewide recognition, said Phil Labriola, Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Art Department Chair. I am confident she will continue to grow and experience success in her artistic pursuits when she graduates from West.

The artwork of Karlic and the finalists is now owned by the United States Navy. Finalists will receive a formal Certificate of Recognition, an official ships plaque with the winning crest, and an invitation to attend the Commission Ceremony and guided tour of the nuclear submarine.

Karlic was recently awarded the grand prize in the 2015 Illinois Tollway Map Cover Art contest. Her artwork won among students who were invited to participate across twelve counties to increase awareness about the danger of tired driving.
