Monday, March 9, 2015

Lincoln-Way Norths Jazz Ensemble received Division 1 Ratings from all three judges at the Jazz in the Meadows competition in Rolling Meadows last month. Students competed against 115 bands from across the Midwest.

Students performed Blue Cellophane by Duke Ellington featuring soloist Jack Kotze, Chelsea Bridge by Billy Strayhorn, and The Puffy Taco by Victor Lopez. Kotze received recognition as Outstanding Soloist in the Class 3A division.

Jazz education at Lincoln-Way North is quickly developing a quality reputation, said Kirk Hickman, Director of Bands. In a short span of time, the kids have really worked on not only performing this American form of music, but getting in depth in studying the history and critically listening to historically significant recordings.

Im very proud of all of these students and how much they have progressed as individuals and as a program.

Students were treated to a performance from Grammy award-winning jazz band, The Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band.
