L-W Central Mathletes win regional for 5th year

The Lincoln-Way Central Mathletes team won their regional site contest for the fifth year in a row, qualifying the Knights for the state competition on May 2, at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

The Knights took first place in 5 out of 10 areas of competition and second in 4 areas of competition earning a total score of 488 points. Second place went to Lincoln-Way West with 459 points and third place was earned by Crete-Monee High School with a score of 325 points.

Mathlete team members who earned individual awards were: Freshmen Drew Daletski, Zak Dundek, and Lexie Krupske in Algebra 1; sophomores Carols Ferran-Heredia and Michael Gentry in Geometry; junior Matt Fleckenstein in Algebra 2; and seniors Pat Burke, Marc Veihl, and Allison White in Pre-Calculus. Seniors Marc Veihl and Maddie McLaughlin placed first in their oral on Combinatorics and Probability.

McLaughlin commented on the oral competition stating, We knew our stuff, but time is short and you have to explain the math pretty quickly. It was a lot of fun.

Additional first place finishes were won by the Algebra 1 team of Adam Ceh, Drew Daletski, Zak Dundek, Lexie Krupske, Emily Parker, and Ben Zuraitis; the Pre-Calculus team of Pat Burke, John Christel, Priya Patel, Brandon Ross, Marc Veihl and Allison White; the Junior/Senior team of Allison White and Matt Fleckenstein; and the Calculator team of John Christel, Marc Viehl, Derek Jones, Sam Schletz and Sean Dennelly.
