Lincoln-Way students recognized at Veterans of Foreign Wars Award Banquet

On Sunday, January 29, 2017, nearly 50 students, parents, and teachers attended the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Award Banquet for the Voice of Democracy essay contest. This year's event was held at Cantigny VFW Post 367 in Joliet. Lincoln-Way students took the top 3 honors.

Students who placed included:

• Ryan Burggeren, Lincoln-Way West (First Place)
• Paul Buldak, Lincoln-Way West (Second Place)
• Dylan Humiston, Lincoln-Way Central (Third Place)

Burggeren will be progressing to the next step in the competition and will be invited to attend a banquet in Springfield in February.

Students were encouraged by their English teachers to apply in September. English teachers whose students received recognition were Michelle Cartolano, Sara Davy, Mike Franta, Hilary Gansauer, Mary Hilbert, and Lisa Yanule.

Lincoln-Way Central Department Chair, Sandra Rogina, says, “We’ve always had a great working relationship with the members and the Ladies Auxiliary of Post 9545.”

West Department Chair Mary Hilbert adds, “I am proud of our students who maturely and articulately responded to this year’s essay prompt, ‘My responsibility to America.’ These young men and women clearly demonstrate that they have bright futures as leaders.”
