Lincoln-Way East Cheerleading wins State Championship Title
Friday, February 10, 2017

For the third time in four years, the Lincoln-Way East Varsity Cheerleading Team brought home the State Championship Title. Twenty cheerleaders performed in the competition on Friday, February 3, 2017, and again on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Illinois.

While the Griffins have always had a competitive reputation, the transition of student populations in 2016 brought new teammates. “I felt like this season was just really crazy meeting all the new people this year,” says senior Taylor Johnson. “It was the first time we got to go to State all together as a team, even though it wasn’t the first time at State for all of us. It was really fun to experience it with everyone.”

Senior Christa Mack has similar sentiments. “The team’s about half from North and half from East, but it’s not segregated at all.”

Of the 25 competing teams, only ten advance to perform on day two of the competition. With a score of 89.49, the Griffins’ Friday night performance secured third place to continue into day two.

“This was my first time at State performing,” says senior Ally Chavez. “Honestly, it was an incredible experience. On the floor, we just had an adrenaline rush and the crowd was unreal.”

On Saturday afternoon, the Griffins scored a 94.46. Lincoln-Way East won the title by a 1.75 point margin over Joliet West, the second place team.

After crying, hugging, and celebrating their victory in Bloomington, the team hit the road for a parade and trophy presentation. “The parade started at North which was really cool,” says Mack. “There was a huge line of cars on the way to East to support us.”

The night was complete with a trophy presentation in the Lincoln-Way East Auditorium where family, friends, community members, and staff joined together to celebrate the Griffin win.

“This year just being called first was the best feeling ever,” says Chavez.
