Lincoln-Way East Best Buddies Sponsors awarded 'Advisor of the Year'Thursday, June 15, 2017
On Monday, June 12, 2017, Lincoln-Way East Best Buddies Sponsors, Johnny and Beth Russler, were awarded ‘Advisor of the Year’ by Best Buddies Illinois for bringing the club together and growing the program to be a district-wide organization.
The award was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Russler by their current Best Buddies student officers, along with the president, Julia Chillon, who also spearheaded the end of the year/congratulatory dinner where the award was presented.
Each year, Best Buddies Illinois chooses sponsors who have done an outstanding job in assisting Best Buddies as an organization to thrive. This year, Mr. and Mrs. Russler were awarded this honor because of their dedication to growing the Best Buddies program to Lincoln-Way Central and West’s campuses.
“It is an honor to be recognized from such a charitable and noble organization. It is our pleasure to sponsor such a wonderful group of students,” Johnny Russler explained. “From our students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to our student officers, it is wonderful and part of something important: acceptance.”
Since the 2011-2012 school year, Best Buddies-East has been growing the organization which helps individuals within the community find meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, and improve self-advocacy skills. Best Buddies-East have previously been awarded Rookie Club of the Year, Outstanding Chapter of the Year, and President of the Year.
