On Friday, May 9, the Step Team at Lincoln-Way East High School
will showcase some of its dance moves at an evening performance
at the school.
The team, which includes about 30 students, is
coached by Lincoln-Way East social science teachers Sara Pavlik
and Sarah Brady as well
as Lincoln-Way psychology teacher Nicole Porter.
“The point (of step dancing) is to create dances or routines
that involve little to no music,” said Pavlik, who traces
the dance form to post World War I.
Students use their hands and feet to create a synchronized dance,
clapping and stomping their way through each routine, she added.
The school’s Step Team started last school
year when a group of students asked Brady to sponsor it.
The girls now practice three days a week (between January and May) from 3:30-6
p.m.
“In recent years, Step has become more popularized and
more accessible to high school students through teams and competitions,” said
Pavlik. “It is really just an extension of the college culture
into the high school level.”
The Step performance will begin at 7 p.m. in Lincoln-Way
East’s
auditorium.
Entry is $3 for adults and $2 for students.
