L-W East student named to IHSA All-State Academic Team

Jeffrey O’Brien, a senior at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort, has been named to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) All-State Academic Team.

He is one of only 26 students from throughout the state of Illinois selected for the honor. Nearly 500 students were nominated.

“This a tremendous honor for Jeff and his school, “ said Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie. “It shows that if you have strong academics, excellence in extra-curricular programs will follow.”

“Jeff is the epitome of what we aspire our Lincoln-Way East students to be in terms of academics, activities and athletics,” said Lincoln-Way East Principal Dr. Michael Gardner. “He was able to excel in all three. Jeff always gives extra effort in whatever he does, and it has paid off for him. We’re proud of him and his statewide recognition.”

Jeff is an Illinois State Scholar, an AP Scholar with Honors and National Merit Finalist. He earned a 5.003 GPA on a 4.0 scale, placing him in the top five of his class. He scored a 35 on his ACT, finished 5th in the state with his Mathlete’s eight-person team, and participated in a week-long University of Notre Dame Global Issues Seminar that earned him one hour of college credit.

Jeff also is a member of the school’s Speech Team and cross country team. He has taken 1st place in seven different speech tournaments over the years, winning his conference twice and qualifying for the state speech tournament his freshman, junior and senior years.

In cross country, Jeff was named Most Improved on the team and won the Gutty Griffin Award for determination and tenacity.

Academically, Jeff is a member of Pi Sigma Pi (history honors), Mu Alpha Theta (math honors), National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. He has been involved with the IIT Regional Bridge Building Competition as well as Lincoln-Way East’s Writing Center tutoring program.

To be eligible for consideration for selection to the All-State Academic Team, students must meet the following requirements:
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale after the seventh semester
• Have participated in at least two IHSA-sponsored activities
• Have demonstrated outstanding citizenship during her/his high school career

Jeff admits it isn’t always easy juggling academics with athletics and school activities.

“There’s a lot of time management involved,” he said.

In the fall, Jeff plans to attend the University of Notre Dame and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
