Understandings

(Semester 1) Students will demonstrate skills in comprehension, interpretation, and analysis through the reading of short stories, novels, and an epic.

(Semester 2) Students will demonstrate skills in comprehension, interpretation, and analysis through the reading of nonfiction, a contemporary novel, and a Shakespearean play.

(Semester 2)  How do knowing definitions and applications of literary terms and concepts affect a student's skill level?

recognition and application of: allegory, satire, fable, foreshadowing, symbol, irony (3), imagery, simile, metaphor, blank verse, meter, soliloquy, alliteration, pun, characterization, plot and its sequence, point-of-view, allusion, epic, flashback, epithet, theme, conflict (and types), mood, tone, protagonist/antagonist

reading passages, unit tests (both objective and essay), timed writings, collaborative projects, subsearching texts, formal discussions
