Stage 1: Desired Results

Understandings

Students will be able to recognize, identify, and discuss literary terms and concepts in a variety of genres and literary selections.

(Semester 1) Students will reinforce skills in comprehension, interpretation, and analysis through nonfiction, novels, and a Shakespeare play.

(Semester 2) Students will extend skills in comprehension, interpretation, and analysis through the reading of novels, drama, and poetry.

(Semester 1) How does  the use of literary devices further develop character, style, tone, and theme?

(Semester 2) How will knowing definitions and applications of literary terms affect a student's skill level?

recognition and application of: all terms from freshman year, plus antithesis, narrative voice, foil, denotation & connotation, personification, idiom, author's purpose, tragedy, tragic hero, dialect, dynamic/static character, paradox, motif, historical genre, hyperbole, extended metaphor, elegy

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

reading passages, unit tests, (both objective and essay), timed writings, collaborative projects, subsearching texts, formal discussions
