Lincoln-Way Central had 89 students take the prestigious American Math Competition given across the nation on February 12, 2010. “There are 150 possible points on the exam, and any student who scored 88.5 or more of these points automatically qualified to take the American Invitational Math Exam (AIME). This is a 75-minute exam with 25 math questions, and is the first step in qualifying for the U.S. High School Math Olympics team. ” stated Jim Mudrock, math teacher and teacher sponsor of the exam.
At Lincoln-Way Central, the top 5 scores were Jacob Behm with 106.5, Gianluca Panici with 87, Erik Newman with 81, Tom Dohm with 78 and Jason Mudrock with 76.5. Because of his outstanding score Jacob Behm qualified for the next level of the competition, the AIME.
“To qualify for the U.S. High School Math Olympics team students who score high enough on the AMC are invited to take the AIME on March 16, 2010. Students who score high enough on the AIME are selected to take the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). The top scorers on the USAMO are invited to represent the United States in the International Math Olympics. Congratulations to all,” added Mudrock.
The American Math Competition also recognizes top scoring freshmen and sophomores on the underclassmen version of the exam. At Lincoln-Way Central, the top four scorers were Isaac Carrasquillo with 109.5; Caleb Nielsen with 96, and Kelly Fleckenstein and Kevin Tishka both with 90.
