Monday, September 17, 2012
The award-winning Lincoln-Way Central Marching Knights began their competitive season this past Saturday, September 15, with a quality performance at the Providence Catholic Marching Band Invitational in New Lenox.
The Marching Knights finished 2nd place in the Class AA category with a score of 68.15. Downers Grove South took 1st place with a 68.6 and Glenbard West scored a 60.5 to round out the top three in class AA. The overall Grand Champion was Marion Catholic High School.
More than a dozen bands competed in the Invitational, including Evergreen Park, Evanston Township and Downers Grove high schools.
"The Marching Knights also received additional awards: Outstanding Musical Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance, Outstanding Auxiliary, and Outstanding Percussion," stated a proud Eric Wellman, Director of Bands for Lincoln-Way Central.
"This was a very solid start to our competitive season. It was wonderful to see the improvement made from the start of summer practice," added Wellman.
"The Marching Knights' new field show for the 2012 competition is entitled Awareness, which is based off of the different ribbons that symbolize various causes. We portray different colors and emotions on the field using the ribbon. Emotions as colors in the show piece are: loss, anger, reflection, and hope," noted Wellman.
The band will compete next at the Chicagoland Marching Festival at Wheeling High School on September 22.
The Marching Knights also perform their competitive show during half time at each home football game. Drum majors leading the band are Sarah Martin, Nick Kross, and Amanda Cowfer.
Area residents will have the opportunity to see the band perform in its entirety at a Marching Band Showcase featuring all four Lincoln-Way High School marching bands on October 24 at Lincoln-Way West High School, 21701 S. Gougar Road in New Lenox. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m..
