L-W Central Marching Knights prepare for new 2012 season
Tuesday, July 3, 2012

The award-winning Lincoln-Way Central Marching Knights have begun their 2012 marching season introducing new band members to their music. The entire band is learning the music and routines for their upcoming competitive show season, and their traditional favorite parade music, Battle Hymn of the Republic.

The 106- members strong Marching Knights are practicing during the summer on their practice field, in band classrooms, and in the Knights stadium getting ready for their busy marching season.

Band Camp for the Knights is July 29 - August 2 at St. Joseph's College in Rensellaer, Indiana. Their first summer 2012 parade performance was the Mokena July 4 Community Parade.

"The Knights are busy learning their new show entitled 'Awareness' which is based off of the different ribbons that symbolize various causes. We will be portraying different colors and emotions on the field using the ribbon. Emotions and colors in the show piece are: loss, portrayed with black; anger, portrayed with purple; reflection, portrayed with pink; and hope, portrayed with white ribbon," noted Eric Wellman, Band Director and music teacher for Lincoln-Way Central.

"I think this could be a very powerful show for the students and for the audience," added Wellman.

Parades, performances, and competitions begin for the Marching Knights, Saturday, August 11 with the Momence Parade; playing for the District 210 Institute Day on Wednesday, August 15; a performance at the Joliet Slammers on Saturday, August 18; opening with Knights football on Friday August 24; Music-a-Thon, August 25; Frankfort Fall Fest Parade on Sunday, September 2; Manhattan Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 3; Providence High School show on September 15; Wheeling High School show on September 22; Knights Homecoming Parade on Sunday, September 23; and the final competition of the year is the State of Illinois Marching Band Championship at Illinois State University on October 27. The Marching Knights host their traditional Sounds of the Stadium on October 29.

The Marching Knights also perform their competitive show during half time at each home football game. Drum majors leading the band are Sarah Martin, Nick Kross, and Amanda Cowfer.
