Lincoln-Way ushers in new school year

Lincoln-Way High School District 210 welcomed 7,400 students back to school Thursday, Aug. 16, with smiles, handshakes and high-fives.

"That's a fine looking shirt," Dr. Scott Tingley, Principal at Lincoln-Way East High School, told a student as he walked up wearing a cobalt blue shirt with the school name on it.

The building principal planned to meet with each class in the coming days, encouraging freshmen to get off on the right foot by becoming involved in school clubs and activities, reminding sophomores to stay focused, and congratulating juniors for becoming upperclassmen and asking them to set goals for the next two years.

To the senior class, Tingley planned to point out that they are now the school leaders and that they need to set good examples for East's entire student body.

Over at Lincoln-Way North, Dr. Michael Gardner, principal, invited students, teachers and staff to join the marching band as it made its way through the halls playing the school fight song. They met in the school gymnasium for an all-school assembly.

There he reflected on the school's first four years of existence and the legacy students left behind for future generations to build upon.

"Gone are all the students who were here for the first day of school in 2008," he said. "Gone is the uniqueness of a new school, and beginning this year we begin a phase of maturity as we move away from the newness.

"The students of the past four years, our first, have set the bar high for those who follow," he continued. "Test scores, activity participation and athletic success have all reached very high levels as we applaud and thank them for the legacy they left behind. The effort expended in the classroom must be your best. There are no shortcuts to a quality education."
