College Planning FAQs

When should students apply?
The time to apply is now!  Most colleges have separate deadlines for their applications, but in general, from September 1 to November 1 are considered a “Priority Filling Period” for college applications.  Research shows that 85% of the students that apply during this time period receive acceptance to the college of their choice.  So increase your chances and reduce your stress, and get those applications in by Halloween!

How do students apply?
Colleges prefer that students apply online and send their applications electronically.  Students can easily go to the desired college website, link onto admissions, and follow the steps to apply.  Colleges receive the application instantly, and typically students receive a quicker response.  If a student prefers to apply with a paper application and send it through regular mail, he/she is not penalized.

How many schools should students apply to?
Students can apply to as many as they would like.  However, keep in mind that most schools have an application fee, and it could be costly.  If you apply to more than six schools, you really have not narrowed down your choices.  Also, pay attention to each college’s academic admissions requirements.  Make sure you “meet” their requirements
before applying.

In addition to the application, what other materials will students need to submit?
Every college is different so pay close attention to what is needed.  Some colleges may require the following items: personal statement or essay, letters of recommendation (teacher or counselor), application fee, secondary school report or counselor form, list of school or community activities.  All schools will require an official transcript.  Students should meet with their counselor to request an official transcript.  There is a $1.00 fee for each one ordered.
