Tommy Murray III, a senior at LWC, is one of three high school hockey players to be named a 2023 Blackhawk Alumni Scholarship recipient. According to the Chicago Blackhawk Alumni Association, “Awards are determined from a candidate’s level of community service, volunteerism, good citizenship, as well as hockey talent of the individual who receives $7,500.00 annually over four years.”

Tommy, who plans to continue playing hockey in college, will attend Olivet Nazarene University to major in civil engineering next fall. He hopes to attend law school to become a criminal justice attorney and then a judge in the future.

“I am extremely honored to be selected to receive such a prestigious award and could not be more excited. This award means so much to me as it makes every sacrifice worth it. All the nights I spent studying, all the clubs I joined, and all the community service activities I have taken part in all culminated to that moment when I was awarded the scholarship and it felt amazing. It was just so incredible to see all the time I put into my academic career finally pay off in the biggest way,” said Murray.

Tommy was at a loss for words when he got the call about the scholarship from former NHL player Adam Burish “Winning the scholarship meant that I was now part of the Blackhawks organization, which was such an amazing moment, especially being a Blackhawks fan my entire life. Just to be a part of the organization that I grew up watching as a kid feels surreal, and is hard to put into words, but I am just so blessed and grateful to be given this tremendous opportunity,” he said.

Murray feels lucky to have had such amazing people surrounding him throughout his entire lifeFrom his parents who were there to support him, to his teammates and coaches who helped guide him for thirteen years in the sport, he says he wouldn’t be where he is today without them all.

As for his time at Central, he says, “Lincoln-Way has presented me with a plethora of opportunities, all of which were a big part of my success. I have been fortunate enough to have some amazing teachers that have helped inspire and guide me throughout my four years at LWC. Their encouragement and guidance have helped me solidify my plans for the future.”
