Congratulations to Alyssa Cannon, Centra's Teacher of the Year!
Mrs. Cannon is someone who is dedicated to making our students feel heard, safe and supported. She is a person that puts her whole heart and soul in every aspect of her job and goes above and beyond on a daily basis to create a supportive and welcoming culture at LWC. Her superpower is the ability to help a student before it truly impacts them in the classroom. Her efforts also help struggling students get back into the classroom where they can effectively grow academically.
She supports students in ways that makes LWC feel like their safe haven and a place where adults can be trusted. She often serves as our student's trusted adult. With that, her students are inspired to feel this same sense of safety in our classrooms and programs, too. Her visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to mental health has been instrumental in transforming how we support the well-being of our students and staff. After COVID when mental health concerns were on the rise, she has been the guiding force in leading our school’s mental health initiatives. She has championed the use of Referral GPS, which has connected countless families with quality mental health professionals. Her dedication to understanding the trends of our student body has created opportunities to receive support in areas such as anxiety & executive functioning.
She is the creator & sponsor of Bring Change to Mind. She leads the Sandy Hook Promise- See Something, Say Something initiative- educating & empowering students to take action when concerned about a classmate. Mrs. Cannon collaborates with Mrs. Vaculik & Mrs. Korczak to lead the charge of creating common language across all classrooms at LWC. She also works with our student athletes to help them develop the mental resilience and focus needed to perform at their best. Her dedication to students, her passion for supporting mental health, and her ability to inspire and teach others make her a standout professional in her field. She is not only a trusted adult for both students and staff, but she is also someone who embodies the true heart and spirit of the LWC school culture.
