💐ACT English test tip of the day💐
When you see a question stem that looks like this:
💐Suppose the writer's primary purpose had been to...Would this passage accomplish that purpose?
💐Approach this question type by a)considering what you think the purpose of the passage is and then determining if that purpose is what is described in the question stem. If so, was that the passage's MAIN purpose or was that a lesser or subordinate purpose? b)Based on your determination, narrow your options down (YES/NO). c)Finally, look at the explanation given after the "yes/no" and choose the option that provides the most accurate description of the passage's actual purpose and content.

🍀ACT English test tip of the day🍀
When you see a question like this: For the sake of the logic and cohesion of this paragraph, sentence #___ should be placed....-OR- The writer wants to add the following accurate sentence to the essay [sentence]. The sentence would most logically be placed ___.
🍀Approach these question types by a)determining if the sentence in question makes use of dates or times. If so, be sure the info is placed chronologically. Likewise, if the sentence is a part of a series of steps or operations, make sure the placement of the sentence makes sense as a part of that process. b)Consider whether the answer choice places the sentence at the beginning or the end of the paragraph or passage. Can the sentence function in that introductory or concluding role?

🔥🔥ACT English test tip of the day:🔥🔥
If you see a question like this: Given that all the choices are accurate, which one most effectively emphasizes/indicates/suggests.....
Approach by reading the stem carefully-remember we are not looking for ANY answer that could work in the passage, we want the answer that accomplishes a particular task. Wrong answers may be rhetorically effective but fail to satisfy the instructions in the stem.

ACT English test tip of the day:
When you come across a question stem like this: The writer is considering deleting the underlined portion. Should the underlined portion be kept or deleted?
Consider the following:
✔️When being asked to add, keep, or delete, reread the rest of the paragraph. Consider how the info in question contributes to the paragraph's main topic. Is the info relevant or is it irrelevant and distracting? Would keeping/adding the info make the paragraph easier to understand? Does the info fit at this particular point in the paragraph or does it interrupt the flow?
✔️When being asked to keep or revise, compare the revision to the original. When you read the original, does it seem like something is missing that a revision could resolve? Or, conversely, does the revision feel more vague/less clear than the original?
✔️Once you've decided to keep, add, delete, or revise, evaluate the justification provided and choose the best one.

ACT English test tip of the day:
When you see a question stem like this: Which choice most effectively concludes the paragraph and essay? -OR- Which of the following sentences, if added here, would most effectively conclude the essay?
Approach these questions by a)reading the stem carefully. Does it ask for an effective conclusion or a particular type of conclusion? b)reread the last paragraph. Pay attention to the second to last paragraph in particular. Does the conclusion follow smoothly from this sentence? Does it make sense in the context of the paragraph and the passage? c)select a conclusion that ties together the main ideas discussed in the passage. Avoid answers that seem to introduce a new or tangential topic. See your English teacher if you need extra practice. ❤️🖤

ACT English Test Tip of the Day:
If you see a question stem like this--"Given that all the following choices are accurate, which one provides the most effective link between the preceding sentence/paragraph and the sentence/paragraph that follows?" --approach the question by a)reading the stem carefully. Does the question ask for a transition that provides a link from the preceding sentence or a transition that leads into the next sentence (or both)? Is the question asking about a transition from one paragraph to another? b) Reread the rest of the paragraph--does the transition mark a shift in the focus of the paragraph? c) Select the choice that fulfills the instructions in the stem and provides the most logical transition.

ACT English tips:
For punctuation questions, eliminate choices that use unnecessary commas between subjects/verbs, between adjectives/nouns, or between prepositional phrases. Punctuation should match-don't pair a comma with a dash or parentheses.
In order to use a semicolon, be sure an independent clause is on both sides of the semicolon.
