Students in Mrs. Zolk’s English 2 Honors classes are beginning their study of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.  To introduce the play, students read a short anticipatory script and performed in groups. They did a great job familiarizing themselves with Shakespearean language, analyzing important lines, inferring character traits, and predicting dominant theme topics. Well done, scholars!

On October 23rd, thirty-seven LWE students had the incredible opportunity to attend the Learning Lab "Virus Variant Detectives" at Argonne National Laboratory. This hands-on experience provided students with a deep dive into the world of biotechnology, focusing on the fundamentals of gel electrophoresis and genetic analysis. During the lab, students learned how scientists detect and monitor virus mutations, with a specific focus on COVID-19. They gained practical experience with gel electrophoresis, a procedure used to separate and analyze genetic material. This experience allowed students to directly engage with real-world scientific methods, enhancing their understanding of biotechnology and its impact. In addition to the technical skills they developed, students also sharpened their critical thinking abilities by analyzing COVID-19 RNA sequences. This exercise encouraged them to evaluate data and form scientific hypotheses, simulating the role of researchers in the field. Special thanks to our dedicated LWE science teachers: Scott Fletcher, David Mulconrey, and Shane Tucker, who accompanied and supported the students on this educational experience.
