The Regional Bridge Building Contest was held on Tuesday, January 21, at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The competition was divided into two regions: the Suburbs and the City of Chicago.
In the Suburbs Region, Lincoln-Way East students earned 1st, 4th, 8th, and 12th place. The students—Alexa Grove Schneider, Logan Murphy, Madison Stang, and Robert Chavez—finished 1st, 4th, 8th, and 12th respectively.
Alexa Grove Schneider’s bridge won the contest with an efficiency of 2133. Her bridge had a mass of approximately 18 grams (about the mass of three nickels) and held nearly 40 kilograms (about 88 pounds). The winning bridge is determined by efficiency, which is calculated by dividing the mass held by the mass of the bridge. An efficiency of 2133 means the bridge held 2,133 times its own mass. Alexa also achieved the highest efficiency across both regions.
As a result, Alexa is now eligible to represent Lincoln-Way East at the International Bridge Building Contest, which will be held in Chicago on April 25.
It is great to see students working on projects outside of the classroom and connecting them to concepts learned in class. Based on their designs and results, it was clear that these students dedicated a significant amount of time and effort to this project.

Biology teacher, David Mulconrey brought over 30 students to Argonne National Laboratory’s Learning Labs for the Virus Variant Detectives experience. During the visit, students worked hands-on with real scientific tools and data to investigate how viruses evolve and how variants emerge. The program gave them a chance to apply classroom concepts in a real research environment, strengthening their scientific thinking and sparking interest in future STEM opportunities. A special thanks to Alexandra Marquez, Stacy Lodes, and Alicia Lamacki for joining our students on this experience.

The holiday family adoption program was once again a success this year!
